Annual Amanda McPherson All Star Memorial Softball Tournament – June 17th
Each year the Simi Valley Girls Softball organization holds an All Star Tournament. The tournament was named in Amanda’s honor after she passed away and is held the weekend closest to June 17th – Amanda’s birthday. The All Star uniforms were later changed to purple, Amanda’s favorite color, and include Amanda’s logo on the jersey. The uniform usually includes socks with Amanda’s logo and in recent years, we have added headbands as well.
The tournament originally was drew only a handful of teams, but has consistently grown over the years. It is recognized as one of the best tournaments in the area and now draws so many teams that teams have to be turned away due to lack of time and fields to compete. Over 120 teams tried to sign up in 2012.
Both SVGS and TAMF are extremely proud of this tournament. The most important part of the tournament is the Amanda Spirit Award. After each game, the coaches and players from each team award a player from the opposing team with the Spirit Award. In Amanda’s memory, it is awarded to the player who gave the best effort or showed the most spirit. The award has been a logo softball, a logo visor, logo socks, logo shoelaces and this past year, a logo headband.
Families from all over southern California enjoy their weekend at the tournament and are kind enough to make donations to the foundation. Their support is greatly appreciated and funds are used to support the foundation’s youth sports goals.
Annual Amanda Memorial – All Star Tournament 2013
At our annual tournament in 2013, we played in memory of Sydney Angle. All the wonderful softball families in Southern California raised over $2,000, which was sent directly to the family. Thanks also to Fox Sports West for including our story in their 4th of July piece aired before the Dodger Game.
All Star Softball Tournament – Sunday Dec 5, 2011 – Agoura High School
Amanda Schwartz, a new friend of the foundation, held an All-Star softball tournament for her bat-mitzvah project for her 13th birthday. The event was held at Agoura High School Varsity softball field. The team from the popular Disney Channel Show “Good Luck, Charlie!” played against Amanda’s All Star team. Local Professional baseball players Bret Saberhagen and Matt Franco joined the team, while sport radio host, Roger Lodge, did a great job of announcing. A fun-filled day of softball included 2 8U All star teams competing for bragging rights. It was a great day of family fun and fundraising.
Father Daughter Softball Tournament – Saturday Jan 30, 2010 – Rancho Simi Park
Stephanie Weir, a great friend of the foundation, held a Father-Daughter softball tournament for her senior project at Santa Susana High School. The event was held at Rancho Simi Community Park beginning at 9:00 am. Teams made up of Fathers and Daughters and Family and Friends joined in to celebrate a fun day of softball for a good cause. Stephanie also collected used sports equipment to be donated to children in the Dominican Republic. The logo that Stephanie created for the event is now used by the foundation on all items that relate to softball, the event Amanda loved so much. Stephanie made the heart in the logo look like a baseball created a great new look for Amanda’s logo. Simi Valley Girls softball also uses this logo as a symbol of Amanda’s foundation.
